Artist Statement
My work is a blend of reality and imagination. It reflects the beauty of nature and everyday life with a focus on women, animals and nature. I’m constantly exploring ways to portray the beauty of ordinary life. Everyday objects with luxurious patterns create a juxtaposition that sparks an appreciation for the things that surround us.
I’m inspired by my experience as a graphic designer, art history and textile design. Combining typography, stencils and texture with strong definitions of form and spatial effects creates a formal tension and blurs the boundaries of graphic art, craft and fine art.
My technique is an updated version of the Flemish School’s layered approach to painting. I begin with a graphite sketch. Followed by layers using water-based paints creating mid-tones, shadow and texture. The final layers are oil paint beginning with umbers and ochres, then color and finishing with details and highlights.
My work aims to transform the everyday into the extraordinary inviting viewers to recognize the beauty in their own lives.
