Artist Statement
The darkening woods entice you to enter. Bring a flashlight, a jacket, and a solid pair of shoes. You approach the lush forest, knowing you must keep an eye out for the smallest beings along the path. You’ll stumble upon insects, skittering on 6 legs beneath your feet. A few are gastropods, iridescent slime trailing their movements. Others are venomous, their bite inducing a hallucinogenic state. And some are unlike any beast you’ve read about in books. As you wander, you’ll need to leave a trail of breadcrumbs behind you so you can find your way back to the start. But know that once you encounter these strange nocturnal creatures, they may not let you leave- at least not as the person you were.
Breadcrumbs is an art exhibit by SLUGKNIVES. Her inspiration for this project comes from children’s books, field guides, and her love for Halloween. All wood pieces were hand cut with a jigsaw. The zine, “Breadcrumbs” is also available as a companion to the exhibit.
Biography
SLUGKNIVES (Jenna Jones) portrays insects, slugs, worms, and other crawling creatures interacting with their surroundings in vibrant colors. Her love for heart-shaped kitsch and midcentury recipes is evident in her works on canvas and paper. Using a jigsaw and scroll saw to shape wood into slugs and worms, she grants them their own personalities. Her art can be found at South Main Creative in Little Rock and in private collections of individuals across North America. Her work was displayed alongside Sulac’s at their joint exhibition at the Galleries at Library Square in Little Rock and at the Argenta Branch of the Laman Library in North Little Rock. Her most recent exhibit, MICRO/MACRO, was displayed at the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub. She is also a teen community educator with North Little Rock Public Library and resides in Little Rock with her partner Luke and their cats, tarantula, and insect pets.
